Dead Wood Sunday

What I wore today:

Sweater - given to me by my sister

Skirt - made out of a pair of thrift-store shorts. It has an olive and red plaid pattern.

Sandals - Wal-Mart, $10, yeah!

Somebody's forgotten attic

I found this magazine clipping in a box of old stuff. It's about fifteen years old, and I love this room. It looks like someone's forgotten attic with the slanted ceilings, bare whitewashed boards, and stenciling on the walls. The dark wood vanity is draped with rumpled fabric and lace curtains are haphazardly tacked onto the windows. It's casual, quaint, and a little creepy. The look as a whole is a tad shabby chic for my tastes, but this room has good character. Maybe I'll do something similar in the new house.

Adventures in the British Raj

Watching Gunga Din has gotten me in the mood for some exploits in the British Raj. It's a fascinating era historically, even if probably most of my interest comes from the highly romantisized material that came out of the Victorian's love for the exotic. Victorian and Edwardian literature and their visually striking movie counterparts like The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, and The Jungle Book, and contemporary books like Slave of My Thirst (about vampires, no less) are examples.

Something about the juxtaposition between ordinary British propriety and the mysterious Orient is striking. The English culture uprooted and transplanted into a strange foreign land of tigers, abandoned temples, pantheistic religions, and plenty of Thuggee cult shenanigans thrown in for good measure... makes for interesting stories!

Probably it's just the combination of pith helmets and parasols.

It might be a fantasy land, but the world of Victorian India is still one of my favorites.

Packing up and moving out

Today is mostly packing. I'm going to be moving in two weeks and have to fit all of my possessions in a couple of suitcases. Pretty much starting fresh on the West Coast! I am looking forward to the cooler climate; supposedly the average temperture in July is only in the mid-sixties. Wow. I've gotten used to Texas' climate and probably won't know what to do with myself (and may need to buy more warm clothes).
I'd like to post some pictures of my awesome Texas country house that I'm soon to be leaving. I've lived here six years and I'm going to miss it... although not so much the weather.

That was the beginning...

What I wore today.

Tank top - Wal-Mart
Blouse - Found it buried in a box of dress ups. It was such a nice light weight cotton that I grabbed it and gave it a tea-dye treatment.
Skirt - Made out of an enormous peasant skirt my sister gave to me.
Boots - hand-me-downs
Locket - eBay

I'm going to go watch Gunga Din.
